But have you ever wondered what would have happened if your boyfriend was christened Gajodhar (no inspiration drawn from any stand-up comedy show!!)? Or how would you have felt if you were called Chameli?( Not that i think its a bad name!!)

Even if people cry out loud that a name does not hold much significance in their life, reality shows a different angle altogether.

Radhika Premani, an MBA student, once told me "My name holds a lot of meaning for me. It reminds me of the inner me; that I am supposed to take the right path in life." So much so for spiritualism!!

But for every head there is a tail. For all those (un)blessed souls who have really common names, like Ashish, Abhishek or Neha lament and wish that their parents had named them something else. Not because they do not like their names but for the plethora of other men and women who hang around with the same name.

Then again there are a few sactified people who live life with almost unique names. Rituja,Trisha,Aksh,Aaron - are a few that I have come across and they sure are pretty pleased with their names - primarily because it's quite infrequent.

Shakespeare had once said " A rose by any name would smell as sweet." But that adage seems to be ancient and redundant for the newer generation.

Safdar Ali Mirza, a Senior Visualiser at Graffiti Multimedia, says, " My name is quite a long one. Its quite a difficult one to remember too - that is why I prefer when people call me Ali or simply, SAM."

And there are myriad number of people who prefer "shortened" names to their actual ones( usually quite long ones) - not only does it reduce the size but also makes it quite chic - Arnab becomes Arnie,Waylon becomes Way and Hrishikesh becomes Rish( just like Krishnamachari becomes Krish!!!)

Quite evidently, like a Bipasha Basu advertisement, small is 'in'.

The Balaji shows are quite famed for mesmerizing almost half our population. But they are also responsible for opening the Pandora's box of a myriad of 'original' names. I know so many women who are in love with the name "Ansh". One of my friends goes to the extent of stating that "I am sure I would not get to marry someone by that name - as it is quite uncommon. But I would definitely baptize my son as Ansh."!!!

One of the craziest names that I heard was - David Boon. Believe it or not, this is the name of a Mass Communication student in Delhi. And yes, that is his full name. " My father was a big fan of the Australian cricket team. So, he named me David Boon. And my elder brother is called Allan Border." Absolutely unbelievable, isn't?

And you thought that name is just a name is just a name? Well, the name game has just begun...
