MYSORE: The heritage city of Mysore, that was adjudged the second cleanest in the country, is crying for attention.Lakhs of tourists will soon pour into the city to take part in the nine-day Dasara celebrations starting from September 28.In view of the importance of the event, there were pleas to create a Dasara Authority. However, with the mega event drawing close, no separate authority has been created. The district administration has not even finalised the artistes and events in advance to help tourists plan their visit. As usual, the city will once again witness last minute preparations to fill up potholes temporarily before the Jambusavari.Ramesh, a student, says: “Even though the corporation takes up works during Dasara, the status of the roads revert to its original status in a couple of months due to sub-standard work. The corporation and the government should fix responsibility and ensure that the contractor maintains the roads for at least a couple of years.” The government had earlier announced `100 crore towards developmental works. However, only `70 crore has been utilised and the proposal for Rs 130 crore is yet to be cleared.Former mayor Sandesh Swamy says the authorities should take steps to increase tax collection and raise resources to take up developmental works in the city.Visitors on most roads are greeted with potholes, poorly maintained footpaths and parks.Zameel, a tourist from Kerala says it is difficult for an outsider to drive on these potholed roads.District Minister S A Ramdas says the government has assured funds for the development of Mysore. However, many feel that good roads, well-maintained parks and beautification in and around the city can bring relief to both tourists and the public and not just empty promises.
