Shillong: Chief Minister designate J D Rymbai, who has been elected Congress legislature party leader, on Thursday met Governor Shivinder Singh Sidhy and staked claim to form Government.
Rymbai, who will head a party-led coalition ministry, gave the Governor separate letters of support from four allies of Congress: the United Democratic Party, the Meghalaya Democratic Party, the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement and the Hill State People's Democratic party.
Rymbai, 72, came into political limelight in 1988 when he entered the Meghalaya assembly and became the Deputy Speaker. He was re-elected in 1993 from Jiran constituency and became the Speaker.
That he never deserted the party in the most trying times paid him dividends in the race for the top post. Unlike outgoing Chief Minister D D Lapang, Rymbai has an unassuming, quiet and clean image in politics.
Lapang represents the Nongpoh constituency and Rymbai, who was Parliamentary Affairs Minister in the last Government, represents the Jirang seat.
