Mohali drug haul: Police arrest boxer Ram Singh
The police said Ram Singh was suspected of trafficking as his brother-in-law too was a proclaimed offender and the boxer was in constant touch with him.

Chandigarh: In a major twist in the Mohali drug haul case, Punjab Police on Wednesday arrested boxer Ram Singh, claiming that his brother-in-law was a proclaimed offender in drug trafficking and that the boxer was in constant touch with him.

Ram Singh is the 16th accused to be arrested following recovery of 26 kgs of heroin worth over Rs 100 crore from the house of a Canada-based NRI Anoop Singh Kahlon at Zirakpur in Mohali.

A Punjab Police release said Ram Singh was arrested for custodial interrogation after recovery of five kgs of a party drug from the house of his relative in Sangrur last Sunday.

The seizure pointed towards deeper association of the boxer with the smugglers, it said. Since the registration of case last month, Ram Singh, who was also roommate of Olympic bronze medallist Vijender at NIS Patiala, was being quizzed by police on day-to-day basis.

Vijender, whose name cropped up in the case, had denied the allegations of taking the drug even though the police maintained the pugilist took heroin on 12 occasions.

Five kgs of methamphetamine were seized from the house of Ram Singh's brother-in-law Ravicharan Singh alias Ravi Deol last Sunday, police said. Fatehgarh Sahib SSP HS Mann said Ram Singh was arrested for custodial interrogation after evidence of his relationship with Deol emerged.

The SSP said during investigation, it came out that Ram Singh was continuously in touch with Deol who also happens to be a "proclaimed offender and a smuggler". During questioning, it was found that Ram Singh has deeper connections with the smugglers, which necessitated his custodial interrogation, Mann said.

Ram Singh, who was serving as a head constable in Punjab police, was dismissed from service after it was established that he procured heroin from the peddlers. Police had earlier claimed that Ram Singh and Vijender took heroin from NRI Kahlon, an alleged drug peddler, and his aide Rocky for personal consumption between December 2012 and February this year.

Punjab Police are yet to arrest a former DSP of the state Jagdish Singh Bholla, suspected to be the kingpin of the busted drug racket. The Fatehgarh Sahib Police had recently questioned Vijender, who had refused to give his blood and hair samples.

An SUV registered in the name of Vijender's wife Archana was found outside the flat during the police raid in which the drug was seized.
