New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday said it would start hearing a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) plea for a retrial in the Priyadarshini Mattoo case from August 31.
The CBI had requested the court to speed up hearing on its petition which challenges the acquittal of main accused Santosh Singh on July 23, without delivering justice to the Mattoo family.
Law student, Priyadarshini was raped and murdered, allegedly by Santosh, son of senior police officer JP Singh on January 24, 1996.
The case went into trial and was handed over to the CBI for proper investigation. On the December 3, 1999, a lower court set Santosh Singh free.
The CBI had submitted a review petition in 2000 against the acquittal order of the trial court, which let off Santosh Singh for want of evidence.
And in 2003, CBI moved the High Court with an appeal for early hearing of its review petition.
In Jammu and Kashmir, the Mattoo family's ancestral home, the Hurriyat Conference supported efforts to reopen the case.
"The rape and murder is verily a poignant incident and we strongly condemn it and appeal to all the upholders of human rights to rise to the occasion to condemn"such brutal acts," a Hurriyat spokesman said.
