COIMBATORE: A 54-year-old man died soon after he returned home after police inquired him in connection with a theft in Periyanaickenpalayam police limits. His son alleged that he died due to the harsh treatment meted out to him by the police.Sources said N Ravindran, 49, from SRB Thottam in Naickenpalaym lodged a complaint with the police over theft of electrical wires. Police arrested P Kuppusamy, 54, from Venkatachalapathy Nagar in G Goundampalayam on Friday. As Kuppusamy’s daughter’s marriage had been arranged to be held a couple of weeks later, he was released on bail after police inquiry, on Friday evening. After returning home, Kuppusmay died on Saturday morning. Hearing this, family members of Kuppusamy and locals staged a road blockade at Goundampalayam bus stop on Saturday.Besides demanding action against the police personnel involved, they wanted an independent medical team to conduct the postmortem, which had to be videographed. After police and revenue officials accepted their demands, they withdrew their protest.Meanwhile, Kuppusamy’s son Murugesan, lodged a police complaint on Saturday, alleging that police had hit his father with lathis and iron rods, due to which he died. Police have registered a case on Murugesan’s complaint and are investigating.Kuppusamy’s body was taken to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for postmortem. Again, the relatives and the public demanded that the postmortem be conducted in front of a magistrate. Hence, the postmortem was performed in front of Judicial Magistrate-VI, Nagarajan.
