New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said her government has not interfered in the issue of the screening of the film 'Teen Kanya', which is said to be based on the Park Street rape case, and called it campaign by a certain section of the media to malign the administration with misinformation.
"I will give you an example of how such concocted stories in which the government has no role to play, are being spread with ulterior motive. It has been reported that government has banned one particular film from public viewing. The government has never interfered in this issue was clearly indicated by the State Home Secretary," Banerjee posted on her official Facebook page.
She said "for the last several months, it is becoming clear that one section of the so-called media has been raising non-issues, for their own vested interests - the sole purpose for which is to malign the present government with disinformation, misinformation and concocted stories, done in collusion with political parties like CP(I)M and Congress."
She gave a list of all the places where the film is running and said "if the government is determined to ban the film, how is it possible that it is being shown at all these places? Obviously, the answer is that it is a well-designed campaign against the government to embarrass and humiliate it."
Meanwhile, the producers of the Bengali film have decided to sue Star Theatre for cancelling the screening of the film under controversial circumstances. "We will go to court to seek compensation for the loss of business and breach of agreement and also seek an injunction against screening of other films for this week as the slot was given to us," the film's director and producer Agnidev Chatterjee told PTI.
The Star theatre, owned by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, has been leased out to Artage, a private company. Ranjan Ganguly, the manager of Artage, claimed that some technical problems prevented the film from being screened.
Despite agreeing to show the film and even putting up posters, Star, a prominent north Kolkata theatre, decided not to screen it last Friday at the eleventh hour.
Chatterjee said that the controversy arose because some people thought that the film was based on the Park Street rape case and showed the government in a bad light. "I will rather describe the film as a thriller which has many issues confronting a woman and not necessarily one which confines itself to one single subject," Chatterjee said.
Starring actors Rituparna Sengupta and Ananya Chatterjee with a guest appearance by West Bengal Education minister and thespian Bratya Basu, '3 Kanya' is the story of a woman raped by three men finding justice only after her case is highlighted by a television news channel. (With inputs from PTI)
