New Delhi: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday sought cooperation from neighbouring states to decongest Delhi and repeated her demand for creating a common economic zone comprising the national capital and its satellite towns to cut down increasing flow of migrants into the city.

Addressing a meeting of the NCR Planning board, Dikshit said pressure on Delhi's infrastructure was growing every day due to increasing population and sought effective steps to deal with the problem.

"Five lakh people come to Delhi to settle down. The ever increasing population has been putting lot of pressure on our water distribution system, public transport, healthcare facilities and educational infrastructure," she said.

Pushing for making National Capital Region a common economic zone, Dikshit said it will help in ensuring uniform development of satellite towns and result in deflecting large number of people to these cities.

The NCR Planning Board, an autonomous body under the ministry of urban development, was set up to prepare regional plan for the NCR and to fund important infrastructure development projects.

She also exhorted the NCR Planning Board to facilitate completion of eastern and western peripheral expressways to ensure that heavy transport vehicles such as trucks carrying goods to neighbouring states do not pass through Delhi.

Union Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Delhi Urban Development Minister A K Walia were among those present in the meeting.

The eastern and western peripheral expressways, connecting a were envisaged to reduce traffic congestion in Delhi Delhi government has agreed to provide 50 per cent of initial cost of Rs 1307 crore for the project. The expressway connecting Kundli, Ghaziabad and Palwal is aimed at making Delhi roads free of inter-state traffic.
