CHENNAI: Fulfilling her announcement that all welfare schemes being implemented by the State government would be extended to the Lankan Tamil refugees living in various camps throughout Tamil Nadu,  Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday set in motion the implementation of the scheme. The Chief Minister inaugurated the scheme at the State Secretariat and handed over assistance to Tamil refugees. As many as 17 refugees living in the Gummidipoondi refugee camp received the aid.Some of the schemes include old-age pension, pension for destitute widows and women, distribution of four grams of gold for needy girls, supply of sewing machines, rotation fund for Self Help Groups functioning in refugees camp and concession in tuition fees for first-generation graduates studying in vocational colleges.Those who received the assistance from the Chief Minister thanked her for the gesture. Previously, the State government had granted Rs 25 crore for upgrading basic amenities in refugee camp and declared that Rs. 10,000 would be given as rotation fund for 416 self-help groups functioning in the camps.12 bridges openedChief Minister inaugurated 12 new bridges constructed by the Highways Department at a cost of Rs 41 crore through video-conferencing facility from the Secretariat.Some of the facilities inaugurated on Tuesday were a new Rs 6. 90 crore bridge constructed across the Cooum river on EVR Periyar Salai at Aminjikkarai, a Rs 11 crore road over-bridge at Panavaram, a Rs 2. 71 crore bridge across Koraiyar river in Thiruvarur district and a Rs 2.16 crore bridge across Mudikondan river. She also inaugurated eight more bridges in various districts constructed at a cost of Rs. 18.22 crore.
