Kolar's Betal Statue Attracts Devotees From Across States For Rituals And Blessings

You must have heard the stories of Vikram and Betal, where Vikram is a king, and Betal is his ghost/spirit or demon companion who rides on the king’s shoulder. Generally, in the country, its is the Gods or the rulers who are worshipped. But in Karnataka’s Kolar, a 108-foot tall statue of Betal has been installed and is worshipped daily. Interestingly, devotees flock here to be a part of the worship and other rituals.

In Karnataka’s Kolar, a towering statue of Betal is revered by the people there. Devotees can be seen prostrating and offering their prayers. This scene unfolds at Betala Mahashakti Pitha in Averahalli village in Kolar. Three years ago, a Bhadrakali Shakti Temple was constructed at this same place. Chandranath, an Aghori and resident of the village constructed the temple.

As per reports, Goddess Bhadrakali appeared in Chandranath’s dream and asked him to build a statue of Betal. Thus, in 2023, the construction of the Betal statue began, which is now complete. The idol attracts people from neighbouring areas, districts and states like Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The Mahamastakabhisheka program began on July 5 and ended on July 7. On the premises of the temple, idols of Goddess Bhadrakali, Kalbhairav, Kateramma and Parvati Devi have been installed here.

If you remember the tales of Vikram and Betal, you would know that the Betal was a ghost or a spirit who never left the King alone. Hence, what’s fascinating is, that this Betal idol attracts devotees from across the states who try to seek relief from problems related to ghosts, spirits, black magic and minor curses. Chandranath believes that once devotees circumambulate the statue nine times, then all their problems will disappear.

There have been reports where devotees have claimed that the statue evoked a sense of awe and dear among them. Every weekend, Bali Puja (sacrifice) and Shanti Puja are performed by the ardent devotees. The legends have it that Betal was a Shivgan (attendant of the Lord) and was actually cursed by Goddess Parvati and hence, wandered the Earth as a spirit. A few devotees of Lord Shiva rever Betal.
