THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kathakali maestro Mathoor Govindan Kutty and Kathakali musician Pallam Madhavan were selected for the state Kathakali Award 2011.Maddalam artist Thrikkoor Rajan and Koodiyattom artist Kidangoor Ramachakyar were selected for the Pallavoor Appu Marar Award and Keraleeya Nritha-Natya Award respectively.Announcing the awards, Cultural Affairs Minister K C Joseph said that all the awards carry a cash prize of `1 lakh, citation and a memento. Mathoor Govindan Kutty had his initiation into Kathakali at a very tender age under tutors Nedumudi Kuttappa Panicker, Kurichi Kunjan Panicker and Kudamaloor Karunakaran. Noted for the depiction of female characters, he had presented Kathakali in various countries. He had received the awards of both the Central and Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademis. Pallam Madhavan is a maestro in Kathakali music and former vice-principal of Kerala Kalamandalam.A jury comprising Madavoor Vasudevan Nair (chairman), Kalamandalam vice-chairman P N Suresh, Vasanthi Menon, Vattaparampil Gopinatha Pillai and Cultural Affairs Secretary Sajan Peter selected the awardees.Thrikkoor Rajan was a recipient of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi award, 2008, and Guruvayurappan Kshethra Kala Award, 2011.Kidangoor Ramachakyar had presented Manthankam Koothu for over 50 years at Annamanada temple. He is also a recipient of awards of both State and Central Sangeeta Nataka Akademis.
