Panaji: Admitting the fact that he was 'less informed' about cinema's social responsibility when he was young, filmmaker Karan Johar observes that the current situation is such that it is significant for everybody to understand films' social impact.
"Social responsibility is a critical thing. I have faltered and fumbled and now I have realized that in the given scenario of our country, we have to be responsible of what we put out there and what we say through our cinema. I realized this in time. I think I was less informed when I was younger. And I was also not aware of the ramifications of cinema on the society. I think we put out certain things for which I apologise. In this day and age, it is critical that we all feel a sense of responsibility before we put out any work. I will be more responsible from now on as I have been in the last couple of years," he said.
When asked if there is a need for censorship on the Censor Board, he said, "Is there a thing like censorship on the Censor Board? What is the point after you are given your certificate? I'm still sitting in the court for several films. I wish censorship was the final authority. I wish it was like once you have the stamp from the illustrious board it gives you the sanction that no religious and social group will go up in arms. I'm fighting court cases that are absolutely banal and ridiculous. I'm still fighting a case for 'Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham'. With the current governance being so pro-active, I hope this is one of the things they do take up. Censorship is the final law. And if that doesn't happen we will continue to be soft targets," he said.
