New Delhi: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has accused the Goa police of completely misleading everyone with their findings into Scarlette Keeling’s murder.
A two-member team of the commission carried out an independent inquiry in Goa and in their preliminary report, the team said up to five people were involved in the rape and murder of the 15-year old British tourist this February.
The Goa police has so far arrested only two. The commission is accusing the state police of destroying evidence and trying to hush up the case.
The team also quizzed the police on the existence of the drug mafia in Goa.
Talking about the report NCW member Nirmala Venkatesh said, “Police were trying to hush up the investigation from the beginning by calling the body as 'unknown' inspite of knowing that the body is of Scarlette. They demolished Lui shack because they did not want to leave any clue to the agencies like us who will come to enquire.”
Venkatesh, during her two days visit to Goa, went around Anjuna beach and met Fiona Mackeown, Scarlett's mother and senior police officials investigating the case.
The NCW member said that they will continue to fight for justice and will brief Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi on the police attitude in this case.
The NCW member clarified that the preliminary report is based on her interaction with the agencies concerned and they will come out with the final report subsequently.
Scarlette Eden Keeling was found dead on Goa's popular Anjuna beach on February 18. Police have already arrested two locals for drugging, raping and leaving her to die.
"We have seen the postmortem and viscera reports. Our findings are based on the evidence found in those reports," the Commission member said.
