New Delhi: Indian Railways has decided to outsource more of its non core operations to private operators.
The railways has called for private companies to bid for contracts for catering food, managing its retiring rooms at railway stations and for housekeeping of major stations and trains, according to Rajen Gohain, minister of state for Railways, in a reply in Lok Sabha.
The new catering policy, which was notified on 27th February, will unbundle catering services on trains.
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) will separate food preparation and food distribution and engage third party service providers from the hospitality industry for providing food on trains.
In a further move aimed at privatization, the Railways has decided to hand over the management of retiring rooms and dormitories to IRCTC.
In order to ensure clenliness at stations, Indian Railways is also outsourcing the housekeeping of major stations and trains so that cleaning can be taken up as a specialised activity.
