HYDERABAD: Jwala Gutta, who has been embroiled in controversies off the court, has finally something to cheer about. The left-handed badminton doubles specialist who struck a gold in the Delhi Commonwealth Games with Ashwini Ponnappa, has been recommended for the Arjuna Award.“I’m really delighted and relieved. It has been due for quite a long time. I thought I would receive it two years ago. My persistent efforts and faith in my abilities has helped me in getting this prestigious award,” said Jwala. The badminton star added that the Arjuna Award is something an Indian sportsperson always looks forward to. “It is a recognition for your achievement for Indian sport.” Meanwhile, she wants to keep her mind off controversies, whether being linked to former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin orher divorce from fellow badminton star Chetan Anand.“Controversies have always been there with me. But I always wanted to focus on my game rather than thinking about them. I do what I feel is right and my parents have always supported me. In fact, I dedicate this award to my family as they kept me going whenever I was in a crisis,” said Jwala.Jwala said winning the Commonwealth Games gold was one of the most emotional moments of her career. “I needed to win that gold. This award would motivate me to do well in the forthcoming World Championships at London.” Her decision to split with her doubles partner Shruti Kurien two years ago seems to have been the right one.“I thought a change would give me a better chance in international competitions. Many questioned this decision saying I was wrong and arrogant. But I was looking at my career. I had an ambition and so I had to break away.It was indeed a painful decision but in the end I proved my detractors wrong.” She is now much happier with Ashwini Ponnappa.“I have found an understanding partner in Ashwini. She is one of the hardest hitters of the shuttle. When a friend suggested Ashwini’s name, I immediately liked the idea. We have gelled very well, on and off court. Our game and lifestyles have suited us. You can expect some good results in the London Championships. We have been working very hard.” Jwala revealed that her mixed doubles partner V Diju has recovered from injury. “Diju looks much fitter and stronger and we plan to do well at the world championships,” said the Hyderabad girl.
