Hyderabad: Hyderabad Liberation day celebrations at Osmania University (OU) campus took a violent turn after scores of students pelted stones at security forces after police prevented them from taking out a rally on Monday. The protesting students demanded that the State Government should celebrate Hyderabad Liberation Day officially. Around 10.30 am on Monday, over 100 students including ABVP and Telangana Vidyarthi Parishad and OU JAC members, carrying Tricolours, started the rally from the campus to the AP State Legislative Assembly.

As the rally reached the NCC gate in the campus, police prevented students from taking out the rally on the grounds that they had no permission for carrying out their rally. On being denied permission, the students sat on dharna in front of the NCC Gate and began pelting stones at the police. As the situation appeared to go out of hand, the police lobbed tear gas shells at the students. Later, police took at least 50 students into their custody.

Student JAC leaders warned they would take out a protest march on Monday evening in the campus. Meanwhile, police forces were deployed around campus premises and the main road leading to the Campus was closed till 12:30 pm. Earlier in the day, police took at least 20 students into custody at Basheerbagh when they were taking out a march towards the AP Legislative Assembly. A few OU students who tried to take out a protest rally from Nizam College premises were also detained by police. Some of them were produced in court.

The National Executive member of ABVP, Ramakrishna said that police arrested some students deliberately. He demanded that the government should celebrate the Liberation day officially. He also warned that they would strengthen the ongoing stir protest against the “callous attitude of the government.”
