He tried to give the slip

CHENNAI: K Muthu (34), who died in police custody on Saturday, was caught by the police after the trail of a theft complaint led to him. Subramani, 51 of Vadakku Kondalamman Koil Street, Thirunagaram, Aruppukottai near Madurai, lodged a plaint on August 7 that during his stay at a Vadapalani hotel, claiming 25 sovereigns and Rs 12,000 belonging to him had been stolen from his room.A case was then filed against Sahul Hameed (32) of Thanjavur, who confessed to committing the crime along with his associate, Muthu. Police then arrested Muthu, who they said confessed to stealing the jewels and pledging them with a pawnbroker on Kamarajar Salai, Virugambakkam, through another person Jeyakumar.He was then taken there by Vadapalani inspector Natesan and other cops to identify the pawn shop, the police said, adding that it was there that he tried to escape.The inspector and his team chased and caught him. On the way back to the police station, he  complained of chest pain and drowsiness and was rushed to a hospital around 7.15 pm But, he died around 7.30 pm.
