Group clash: 8 hurt at Galapuji

Eight farmers were injured in a group clash over Gomala (grassland) issue at Galapuji village in Byadgi taluk on Sunday.

All the injured are undergoing treatment in district hospital.

The gomala, which is spread over 300 acres, has been the bone of contention between the two farmers’ groups. Thirty-two farmers ,led by Gangadhargouda Bheemangouda Doddagoudar, had been given a government patta (records of rights) by the assistant commissioner (AC). But the AC’s order was questioned and an appeal against it was made in deputy commissioner’s court by the other group. The DC upheld AC’s order. The DC’s order was challenged in the Dharwad Circuit Bench of the High Court. The HC ordered both the parties to maintain status quo. The farmers’ group, led by Vanita Guttal, has been demanding the government to preserve the gomala.

Ten days ago, Vanita along with 400 farmers, took out a procession in Haveri and submitted a memorandum to the DC. Fearing an attack on farmers, Doddagoudar and others sought protection. SP Chetansingh Rathor said that police arrested 20 persons belonging to both the warring groups. Police has imposed prohibitory orders in the village, he said.
