New Delhi: Amidst increasing United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) attacks in Assam, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the Capital on Wednesday to discuss the law and order situation in the state.
The CM also briefed the PM on the security measures taken by the state government to ensure that the 33rd National Games starting in Guwahati from February 9, is conducted smoothly. The PM is scheduled to attend the closing ceremony of the event on February 18.
Gogoi also met Home Minister Shivraj Patil to discuss the security situation in the state.
The Prime Minister had recently visited Tinsukia and other affected areas of Assam after the ULFA killed over 80 people, mostly non-Assamese people from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Gogoi urged Singh to sanction a special development programme to enhance employment and develop tourism as well as the vast riverine (char) areas on the Brahmaputra.
On Monday, Gogoi said indirect talks with ULFA through the People's Consultative Group (PCG) was an incorrect step.
On Tuesday, ULFA had warned the premier Northeast Television channel would have to wind up its operations in Assam if it failed to prove its report that the banned outfit had taken money from the government to withdraw its call to boycott the National Games.
