A GO dated February 21 this year of the School Education Department, which prevented the CBSE students from participating in the sports events organised or sponsored by the State government, has been challenged in the Madras High Court.
When the writ petition from B Abinash of Adyar praying for a direction to the State authorities to permit him to participate in all the school level sports events, selection for the TN State team including the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) and other sports meets conducted by the central government came before Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar, Additional Government Pleader P Sanjay Gandhi took notice.
GO said that following an earlier direction from the High Court, the government had formed a committee, headed by School Education Director, to decide the issue. The committee submitted its report, based on which the decision to debar CBSE students had been taken.
The GO, however, added that, if the state Board students were permitted to take part in the sport events organised from cluster to national level by the CBSE, the same would be reciprocated.Ordering notice to the SGFI and to the CBSE, the judge adjourned the issue.
