Agartala: Sheer determination has helped a teenager from a Tripura village to overcome his childhood handicap of stammering and emerge as a pop singer.

Shubhra Kar from Bordowali village, now 17, did not want his shortcoming to stand in the way of his love for music.

The son of a junior police officer, he now enjoys the status of a pop singer in the state, mainly in Agartala and his first album O Shrabani has done well across Tripura.

There was a time when Shubhra used to feel embarrassed about his stammering. But he found sympathisers in his teachers.

When he was in Class VI, his father, Sudip Kar, noticed that stammering did not stand in the way of his son's music lessons said a relative, Jantu Debnath.

Despite initial reservations in the family, he agreed to engage a music teacher for his son.

"I was delighted as I realised that stammering did not pose any problem when I sang," said the budding singer. And thanks to music, within a year he completely got rid of stammering.

"Shubhra's father is planning to send him to a good institution outside Tripura for honing his musical skills after he finishes his school," Debnath said.
