CHENNAI: Former Governor of Tamil Nadu P C Alexander passed away on Wednesday morning at a private hospital in Mogappair here. He was 90 and is survived by his wife Ackamma, two sons - Jawahar (retired IAS officer) and Ashok (Head of Gates Foundation, India) - and two daughters - Kumari and Rajani (an official with the government of Canada).The late bureaucrat was battling cancer for the past five years and was receiving treatment at the Madras Medical Mission (MMM) Hospital, Mogappair, for the past four months.His body will be kept for public view at the MMM Hospital auditorium on Friday morning. His mortal remains will then be to taken Kerala where the funeral will be held at Mavelikkara in Alappuzha district on Saturday at 2 pm.P C Alexander did his post-graduation in Travancore University and M.Litt by research from Annamalai University. He joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1948 and held many distinguished posts at the national and international level. He served as Governor of Tamil Nadu from 1988 to 1990 when the State was under President’s Rule for about a year. He also served as Governor of Maharashtra and as a Rajya Sabha member (2002-2008) from Maharashtra. He quit as Governor in protest after the NDA opted for A P J Abdul Kalam for the President’s post instead of him, in 2002.He worked as the principal secretary to the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and continued in the same post when Rajiv Gandhi took over as the PM. He played a vital role in formulating various policies for India’s development during that period (1981-1985). He also served as the High Commissioner for India in London and held senior posts in the UN. He wrote many books like Through the Corridors of Power, My Years with Indira Gandhi, The Perils of Democracy and India in the New Millennium.
