CHENNAI: Five persons were arrested on Sunday in connection with the murder of a 34-year-old woman, whose body was found dumped in a lake at Pallikaranai. According to police, the body, with hands and legs bound by a nylon rope, was found in the Narayanapuram lake. Unable to identify the victim, the police distributed pamphlets carrying her picture to police stations in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts. Posters were also put at slums in Semmenchery, Perungudi and Kallukuttai.Later, a woman from Pallikaranai, Gowri, identified the victim as her sister Sarala (35). She told the police that Sarala used to live in VOC Nagar, Pallikaranai with her children after her husband passed away four years back. There, Sarala met Sugumaran, a driver in a school. Sarala later started living with Sugumara at Kallukuttai in Perungudi. Gowri told police that her sister went missing on January 25. She also said that she suspected Sugumaran’s involvement in her sister’s murder.Sugumaran was subsequently picked up by police at Kaiveli junction.He told police that he had warned Sarala against having affairs with others as he was in love with her. As she allegedly did not heed his warning, Sugumaran decided to finish her off. Sugumaran sought the help of his friends S Kumar (27), R Sarathkumar (21), Balaji (21) and Sivadinesh (21) for this. On January 25, Sugumaran took Sarala in a car, promising to give her some money. When the vehicle reached the Velachery service road, he strangled her with a nylon rope and hit her with a broken beer bottle, causing an injury to her face.Sugumaran and his friends then threw her clothes near some bushes in Kaiveli and dumped the body in the Narayanapuram lake.Sugumaran’s friends have also been arrested.
