VISAKHAPATNAM: Fisherfolk of S Rayavaram, Nakkapalle and Payakaraopeta mandals in the district are gearing up to launch protests against the proposed Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemical Investment Region (PCPIR) project between Visakhapatnam and Kakinada.
Hundreds of fishermen on Monday passed a resolution during a meeting organised by the Andhra Pradesh Matsyakara Karmika Sangham at Nakkapalle in the district stating that they would strongly oppose the forcible land acquisition for PCPIR and organise various programmes to seek support of farmers and fisherfolk.Speaking on the occasion, president of the sangham T Venkata Ramulu said despite protests from the fisherfolk, Congress is going ahead with the PCPIR project to be constructed on fertile farmlands and coastal areas.

Ramulu came down heavily on chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy for his appeal to fisherfolk and farmers to support the government for land acquisition and setting up PCPIR during Rachabanda at Yelamanchili in the district on Wednesday last.

District president of the Andhra Pradesh Matsyakara Karmika Sangham, Y Nandana said Hetero Drugs and Hetero Labs at Nakkapalle mandal affected the livelihood of several fishermen. The release of toxic wastes by the drug company into the Bay of Bengal without proper treatment has resulted in the extinction of marine fisheries, he said.
