Chennai: The rains in the city have brought life to a near standstill. If you're a student, life takes on a new perspective. Fortunately for me, hot food, a warm bed and restful sleep are all still available. It's at times like this that I really start counting my blessings.

I leave the house and all I'm met with is knee-deep water, congested traffic and miles of slush. The arguments for owning a boat seem stronger than ever in my mind. Riding my trusty bike in the torrential downpour seems like an exercise in madness.

While most people have resigned themselves to the inevitable storm that has the city in its grips, children seem to be making the best of the rain holiday. Small moments of happiness in the wake of flood-related deaths seem fewer and far in between. So we take them when we can. Stasis is what we're looking at now.

We'll try and batten down to brave this storm. All we can do is hope it passes soon.

The streets of Chennai suburb Thiruvanmiyur, in knee-deep water.

A dumpster lies overturned by the floods while people make their way in the distance.

Children play in the water - The only happy faces in this storm.

An empty stretch, a reminder of this force of nature.

A few intrepid travellers try their luck in a pickup vehicle, while a man treads along carefully.

What's your reaction?
