New Delhi: Chinkaras, Blackbucks, hit and run, the underworld - controversy and Salman Khan seem to go hand in hand.
Poaching case
1998 marked the beginning of Salman's legal troubles. Salman was involved in a Chinkara poaching case at Ghoda farms, Rajasthan.
The same year, while in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, to shoot for a song sequence for Rajshri Films' Hum Saath Saath Hain, Salman and several co-stars went hunting in the nearby Thar Desert. The group strayed into a Bishnoi-dominated area, where Salman shot a black buck, a member of an endangered species that is illegal to hunt.
The Bishnoi community - who worship the black buck - were instrumental in registering the complaint against the actor and seeing the case through to the end.
Hit and run
On September 28, 2002 Salman Khan was charged with killing a person and injuring four others when he rammed his Land Cruiser into some people sleeping outside the American Express Bakery on Hill Road junction in Bandra.
Despite the fact that a bodyguard provided by the police was in Salman's car (Salman had been receiving police protection due to death threats from the mafia), he managed to escape from the scene.
He later claimed that he felt his life was threatened by the mob that formed after the accident, but some suspected he'd wanted to avoid a blood-alcohol test.
He was booked for rash driving and causing death due to negligence under the Indian Penal Code.
Stormy relationships
Rumors had always existed that Salman had physically abused his former girlfriend, Pakistani actress Somy Ali. In 1999, Aishwarya Rai’s family also fueled similar tales regarding his behaviour with Aishwarya.
In the complaint, the Rais stated that they "should not be held responsible for any untoward incident involving the actor."
Salman allegedly misbehaved with Aishwarya on the sets of Aziz Mirza’s film, bringing the shoot to a halt. Aishwarya had to opt out of the film later.

He also barged onto the sets of Rohan Sippy's Kuch Na Kaho and threatened both Aishwarya and co-star Abhishek Bachchan.
Salman-Vivek showdown
When Salman Khan and Aishwarya split up, she started seeing Vivek Oberoi. That's when the problems started.
Vivek Oberoi alleged that Salman called him on his cell phone 41 times on the night of March 29, 2003. accusing him of having physical relationships with Aishwarya Rai, Dia Mirza, Rani Mukherjee and Somy Ali.
He said that Salman had warned him to stay away from the actresses or else he would kill him.
Underworld nexus
In 2005 Salman Khan's underworld connections came to the fore with the audiotape of a conversation allegedly between the actor and his ex-girlfriend Aishwarya Rai, in which he spoke of his links with Dawood Ibrahim.
The actor also mentioned that he had prior knowledge of the 1993 Mumbai blasts. He had threatened Aishwarya that he would get the underworld to eliminate her and her family.
However, Salman's lawyer had denied any links with the underworld and dismissed the tapes as doctored.
