HAVERI: PWD Minister C M Udasi announced that a delegation of farmers led by Haveri MP Shivakumar Udasi decided to meet Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar to demand support prices for maize, cotton and paddy. Addressing a meeting of farmer leaders at DC’s office here on Sunday, he said that the BJP government was committed to help farmers in the state. “We are trying our level best to provide good prices for agriculture produce, but the Centre has to extend financial help to us”, he said. The minister assured farmer leaders that issues such as providing uninterrupted power supply to irrigation pump sets, waiver of power bills and compensation to farmers who lost lands would be discussed with the CM and Agriculture Minister Umesh Katti next week. Moreover, the government was concerned about migration of rural people to urban areas. The government took several steps to provide jobs to labourers in villages through MGNREGS. Under no circumstances should they have debts, he added. Farmer leader Shivananadaiah Gurumath urged the minister to pressurise on Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar for financial assistance through in the form of support price for maize, cotton and paddy crops in Haveri.
