KOCHI: Ernakulam was adjudged the state’s ‘best performing district’ in Skilled Development and Equivalency by Jana Sikshan Samsthan (JSS) a national-level agency under the Human Resource department. The district is all set to notch up a hat-trick in the programme after getting a national-level recognition. “Training is being offered to supplement the education received through Class IV and Class VII equivalency examinations,” said K M Subaida, Assistant District Coordinator, District Literacy Mission, Ernakulam.Though the programme is open to all, Subaida said, mostly it is women who are coming forward to take up the Class IV and VII equivalency exams. Apart from this, the nature of the courses is also attracting the distaff side to this particular programme.“Fabric painting, ornament making, cooking, saree designing, soap powder and candle making are some of the courses in which we provide training and all these have been the major attraction of this course,” she said.Subaida also said that though training in aluminium fabrication, tailoring, food preparation had been designed for men, the number of men seeking such courses is less as compared to women.So far, the district literacy mission has offered a set of 256 training programmes to the equivalency programme in the district. These training programmes are being offered through the continuing education centres (CECs) in each panchayat. “There are three continuing education centres in every panchayat which assist us in providing training to the equivalency programmes, whereas JSS assists the state literacy mission in providing training in the skill development programme,” she said.Agencies like Polytechnics and Labour Education Board are helping the literacy mission in its venture. The latter helps in creating awareness about various programmes by the literacy mission.
