Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has said he would start a hunger strike from his hospital bed if lawyers and police in the state didn’t resolve their dispute soon.
For three days, lawyers have clashed with the police all over Tamil Nadu to protest the central and state governments’ alleged inaction in protecting Sri Lankan Tamils.
Karunanidhi, in a statement in Chennai on Sunday night, said police and lawyers should erase the “bitterness” between them. "Whether I need to go on fast is based on the decision you take," he said.
Over 200 lawyers have been arrested and cases have been registered against 300 people.
Chennai Police Commissioner K Radhakrishnan said in a press statement on that all documents pertaining to the clashes between lawyers and police personnel at the Madras High Court on Friday had been forwarded to the Central Bureau of Investigation to help its probe.
Lawyers associations in Tamil Nadu have decided to boycott all courts indefinitely, ignoring Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan’s request to return to work. They also demanded the dismissal of the state and city police chiefs.
The Madras High Court has asked the city police to name on whose authority its force entered the court and caned lawyers. A bench comprising acting Chief Justice S J Mukhopadhaya and Justices V Dhanapalan and K Chandru, at a special sitting late Saturday night, asked the Chennai Police Commissioner and the Joint Commissioner (North) to name the officials who ordered the lathicharge inside the High Court.
