Eastern India battles with floods as a fallout of cyclone Komen

Kolkata: Cyclone Komen has lead to monsoon fury in the eastern part of the country where many areas are battling floods. Komen hit the Bangladesh coast on Friday. Manipur, West Bengal and Odisha are the worst affected states.

Life in Manipur has been badly affected. Many areas in Thoubal and Chandel districts have been completely inundated. Due to excessive rains key highways have been cut off, villages have drowned under heavy water leading to thousands rendered homeless. The MET department has not predicted any rainfall for the state today.

In West Bengal several areas including Birbhum, Bankura, Midnapore, Burdwan, Asansol and 24 Parganas are heavily waterlogged. Transport services have been severely affected in Howrah and Kolkata as well.

So far- 39 people have lost their lives and about seven lakh people have been affected. Over 30,000 people have been sheltered in about 700 relief camps in several districts. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has put state officials on high alert and has also announced a compensation to the kin of the deceased.

According to West Bengal weather officials heavy to extremely heavy rains are expected to lash coastal and southern parts of West Bengal, in Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha. These are visuals from Bhadrak district of Odisha where the rains have caused a flood-like situation. So far three people have died in the floods in the state.
