Drivers say Monza not safe enough
Jenson Button, who had a big accident in testing at the track last week, said that improvements needed to be made.

Monza: Monza is not safe enough and changes need to be made for next year, Formula One drivers said on Friday.

"The drivers are unanimous. This track is no longer up to the safety standards required in Formula One, even though it falls in line with the FIA requirements," Red Bull's David Coulthard told the Autosport website.

"We feel that it is unacceptable. The barriers are too close to the track, the gravel traps are more dangerous than Tarmac and we are frustrated that nothing is being done," added the Briton, one of three leaders of the Grand Prix Drivers Association.

"It did not help that the circuit director decided to cancel his plans to meet us."

Briton Jenson Button, who had a big accident in testing at the track last week, said that improvements needed to be made.

"There are things that we can improve definitely, safety-wise," said the Honda driver, who did not take part in Friday practice due to his team's engine problems.

"But you don't want to change the circuit because it is pretty spectacular. It's very high speed and I do like the layout," he added.

"At Parabolica there is room for improvement. I don't know if they can move the barriers back, but if they can't then asphalt is a better option there. It has been proven that if you have a brake failure, you slow down quicker with asphalt than on gravel."

Australian Mark Webber, at Williams before joining Coulthard at Red Bull next year, has also expressed concern about the fastest and oldest circuit in Formula One where top speeds regularly hit 340 kph.

"Monza isn't the safest circuit in the world so we need to work with the organisers to find some way to make the track a little bit safer," he said.
