New Delhi: England football star David Beckham has finished his trip to Sierra Leone as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Children's Fund.

After completing his trip Beckham said that whatever he had seen in the west African country had brought home to him the urgency of the problem of child mortality rates in developing countries.

He also urged the world not to turn its back on 'shocking and tragic' reality of high child mortality rates in some countries.

"It's been interesting so far, and now we've arrived here at the malnutrition centre. They've got different stages - first stage, second stage, third stage - and we've been through each stage. This little fella, Foday is in first stage at the moment, I think," Beckham said referring to a boy who was holding his hand.

Beckham travelled to the capital Freetown on Friday, before heading to Makeni in the north of the country. The visit by Beckham was kept secret for reasons of security.
