Djokovic successfully defended his title at the Shanghai Masters, holding off del Potro 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (3) in a 2½-hour final.
Shanghai: Novak Djokovic successfully defended his title at the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, holding off Juan Martin del Potro 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (3) in a 2½-hour final.
The Serb was coming off a win in the China Open in Beijing last week over Rafael Nadal. He also won back-to-back titles in Beijing and Shanghai last year and has now won 20 consecutive matches in China.
Del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion, failed in his third attempt to win a maiden Masters title.
He fended off two match points late in the third set, but couldn't put any pressure on Djokovic's serve down the stretch and appeared to tire in the tiebreaker.
Djokovic lost his top ranking to Nadal this week and will remain at No. 2 despite winning the title.
