New Delhi: Madhuri Gupta, the Indian woman diplomat under arrest for allegedly spying for Pakistan's spy agency ISI, has disclosed the identities of Indian intelligence officers posted as diplomats in Islamabad.
Gupta has also mentioned names of intelligence officers posted in some Indian embassies in South Asia and Middle East, sources in the government have told CNN-IBN.
The sources say CNN-IBN that Gupta was either recruited in Baghdad or Kuala Lumpur, and not in Pakistan. Intelligence sources are also trying to verify whether she was used to “bug” the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.
Sources say Gupta, who held the rank of second secretary and was a translator, used to work alone in her department at in the High Commission's press division.
She had been under observation for sometime because of her closeness to Pakistani authorities. Sources say she might have portions of India's plans on Afghanistan.
She was produced before a court in Delhi on Monday which remanded her to further police custody for another five days.
Gupta, 53, was arrested five days ago after she was summoned to Delhi on the pretext of consultations. Gupta was not a member of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), but belonged to the secondary cadre known as IFS-B.
External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, who is in Thimpu for the SAARC summit, on Wednesday called Gupta’s arrest a "serious" issue.
"Investigations are going on and we will have to wait till the investigation are complete and then find out what was the motive and what was the modus operandi," said Krishna.
