RAMANATHAPURAM: In a bid to promote wind energy, the Centre for Wind Energy Technology (CWET), is contemplating establishment of windmills in Dhanushkodi area near Rameswaram in Ramanathpuram district.
The CWET, a Government of India body, has come forward with the idea of conducting a feasibility study in Dhanushkodi area to generate power from windmills. The CWET has decided to install a long tower at Dhanushkodi, near Rameswaram, sources said.A machine will be installed at the tower to record details of the wind. Experts will study the velocity, direction, source and period of wind from the machine, sources said.

The experts will then send the data to the CWET, which will decide on establishing the windmills.

A recommendation in this regard has been made to the government which has to decide on land allotment after lifting the Sethusamudram ban order, he added.

The farm industry is dependant on seasonal rains, tank water and on the Vaigai. Therefore, ryots face heavy losses if there is monsoon failure or delayed rainfall.

Meanwhile, energy is being generated to power grids from the power plants wherein power grids distribute power according to the directions given by Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.
