Despite McCain's lead, Romney, Huckabee still in race
John McCain has cemented his Republican front-runner status.

New Delhi: Vietnam veteran John McCain moved one step closer on Wednesday to winning the Republican Party nomination for president at the US Presidential elections.

“I've long relished the role of the underdog,” he joked during his campaign.

Super Tuesday saw McCain sweep nine states, most crucially California, where with 51 per cent of the vote, he was entitled to all the votes cast for the other Republican candidates.

McCain is now being seen as the new face of the Republican Party.

Exit polls indicated he had scored among those voters who believed he was the best bet to take on the Democratic nominee.

The other nominees, however, don't quite see it that way.

Mitt Romney, with wins only in Massachussetts and Utah, and of course Michigan, gave every impression of fighting on.

“We're going to go all the way to the convention. We are going to win this thing and we are going to get into the White House,” Romney declared.

As for preacher-turned-politician Mike Huckabee, he has shown little strength outside the south but will stay in the race for now.

The next two months could well see McCain emerge as the Republican nominee for president.
