BANGALORE: Twenty one houses were removed, some partially and others completely at Ittamadu in Timmarayagowda colony on Wednesday. As per the survey conducted by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), these houses were identified as encroachments near the canal in the area. This is part of the encroachment removal drive being conducted by the corporation near canals and Storm Water Drains (SWD) in the city.The BBMP has decided to continue with the encroachment removal drive indefinitely. On Tuesday, the corporation demolished a three floor building at Kumbargundi on JC Road. The building was an encroachment near the storm water drain in the area. Munikrishna, the chief engineer, Storm Water Drains, BBMP, said that encroachments will be removed as and when the survey is conducted. “The encroachment removal drive will continue at least for another one and a half months,” he said. Since the court order, 45 encroachments have been demolished or moved. As per the survey so far, at least 91 encroachments are likely to be removed in the coming months. The engineer also specified that there was no necessity for notices to be issued before demolishing these encroachments.On July 5, 2011, the Karnataka High Court directed the corporation to provide the court with a list of encroachments or unauthorised constructions on storm water drains and canals within the city. Back then, BBMP had said that they had identified close to 400 encroachments and had demolished 271 of them.The chief engineer specified that the corporation was going to focus on specific areas in the city. These areas include Dasarahalli, Chikpet and JC Road.BEL road storm water drainWhen asked about the construction of the bridge near the storm water drain in BEL road, the chief engineer clarified that the construction of the bridge was complete and that the storm water drain was ready to use.
