New Delhi: The Government must take "take all political and diplomatic steps" to stop the execution of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, the CPI-M said on Wednesday.
Executing Saddam, who lost an appeal made to a tribunal on Tuesday, would be "judicial assassination" and the UN must stop it, said the party’s politburo in a press statement
"The US and the British governments should realise that they will be responsible for the serious consequences which will result from this extra-legal step".
The "which was bypassed in the aggression and occupation of Iraq, must intervene immediately to stop the execution," said the party, which supports the Congress-led UPA Government. A fair trial for Hussain and his colleagues was not possible "under a regime of US occupation".
"The execution of the death sentence will be a form of judicial assassination," the party said and requested Indians to protest against the death sentence.
