KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation is all set to launch a crackdown on the filthy and exploitative hostel and paying guest accommodations. The corporation is in the final phase of preparing a list of available staying options in the city.“After the list is obtained, regular raids in the accommodations will ensure that they maintain the required standards. This will help us to identify the best hostels in Kochi and also the worst ones,” said T K Ashraf, chairperson, health standing committee, Kochi Corporation. “Now that the strict action will be taken against the defaulters, the unregistered accommodations are now rushing in to get licences. Follow-up raids conducted in the accommodations, which were given notices, revealed that the prescribed changes were made,” he added.Moreover, all the paying guest accommodations which allow more than four inmates will be listed as hostels and will be required to hold licences. The hostels will need to maintain exemplary standards in terms of hygiene, Ashraf added.Express had earlier reported about the pathetic standards of the various hostels across the city. As a result, the Kochi Corporation had formed a special squad to look into the issue and has conducted periodical raids in hostels to ensure that the prescribed standards are maintained.
