New Delhi: North India continues to witness bone-chilling winters on Sunday. The maximum temperature in Delhi dropped to its lowest 12.4 degree celsius. The cold has claimed 23 lives this season. Adding to woes, a dense for enveloped Delhi with 48 trains delayed and two flights canceled.

In Uttar Pradesh, people wrapped themselves in layers of woollens and huddled around bonfires to beat the chill, as temperature dropped to 7 degrees in Lucknow and Gorakhpur. However, there was relief for students till the January 16 as schools will remain closed till then.

Temperatures in Rajasthan dipped further with the desert town of Bikaner going below freezing point to settle at minus two degrees Celsius, making it colder than even mount Abu. This is Rajasthan's harshest winter.

The cold wave sweeping through Madhya Pradesh intensified as well. Worst off are the homeless. The Met Department warns that cold and fog temperatures will persist for a few more days.

The severe cold blast from the north affected Orissa as well. Residents of Bhubaneswar had to wear light sweaters as the minimum temperature dipped to 17 degrees, most unusual in this part of the country.
