CHENNAI: Social media is the new watchword for today’s generation, and has seeped into every arena of life over the past few years. Having changed the way people connect, it has the potential to help marketers reach their target audience better. With this in mind, a summit is being organised in November by the Department of Commerce, MOP Vaishnav College for Women (Autonomous). Called the Social Media Summit International 2011 (SMS in 2011 for short), the two-day meet aims to educate the students of marketing on the future of their chosen field, educate academicians on the latest developments so they can spread the word, and educate the industry on the emerging trends. Addressing a press meet at the college campus on Friday, Principal Dr Nirmala Prasad said that social platforms could give a complete e-commerce solution within the next few years. “When we know that social media is so highly used, we wanted to focus on the various aspects it could be used in – personal branding, social gaming trends, to drive recruitment – the opportunities are endless,” she said.Knowledge partner for the event, echoVME, has arranged for 22 guest speakers who will cover the various facets of the use of social media in marketing. Sorav Jain, Thinker-in-Chief of echoVME said, “The best practices and success stories will be covered. There will also be workshops on marketing perspectives. Another interesting event will be Blogologues, where real stories which people have shared online will be presented as plays and skits.”Registration for the summit is open to students of all streams and academicians and people from the industry. The summit is to be held on November 4 and 5, in the college.
