Three security guards, including an IIT staffer, were arrested on Friday in connection with the attack on Express lensman Albin Mathew in the campus on Tuesday. However, the police are yet to take any action against IIT Prof Prakash M Maiya, who attacked Mathew when he was deputed to take pictures of the Sarayu Extension-II hostel where first-year M Tech student Nerugu Manasa allegedly committed suicide. While the securitymen had pinned him down, the don punched Mathew’s face and rained blows on other parts of the body.
Police said Venkatesan (36) of Taramani and Premanand (36), of Saidapet -- both outsourced from a private security service company -- were arrested on Thursday night for their role in thrashing Mathew.
The duo was produced at the residence of Saidapet Metropolitan Magistrate at 7 am and subsequently remanded to judicial custody till September 9.
Meanwhile, Simon (50), a staff security guard was arrested separately from his residence in the IIT campus on Friday morning. He was the one who took Mathew to the IIT-M’s administrative building and detained him for about an hour until policemen arrived on the scene to rescue him. Simon was produced at the Magistrate Court, which remanded him to Judicial Custody till September 9.
Meanwhile, police said the representatives from IIT-M have sought an audience with the Commissioner of Police JK Tripathy.
