THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In his first interaction with the police top brass after taking over as Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy warned of stern action against police officials who form nexus with criminals.  “A section of the police consider themselves as symbols of power and they are under the impression that nobody will question them. Such impressions will be erased,” Chandy told reporters after the meeting on Tuesday.  Chandy’s comments came in the wake of allegations involving a DySP, Santhosh M Nair, in the murder attempt case against journalist V B Unnithan. Chandy also said that the probe by the Special Investigation Team into the role of Minister P K Kunhalikutty in the ice cream parlour sex scandal case would continue. ‘’The law will take its own course,’’ he said. More surveillance cameras are being installed in five cities to check crimes.  Tuesday’s meeting also decided to announce a reward of Rs 5000 for members of the public who help to nab criminals with the help of mobile phone cameras. ‘’Surveillance cameras are being installed on the main roads and so the public should help to check crimes occurring on the minor roads,’’ Chandy said.He said that ensuring protection to the life and property of the public was on top of the government’s agenda. The police would be given the support necessary to ensure that law and order is maintained properly in the state, he said. The meeting decided to sanction five more posts each in the 143 police stations which are part of the community policing initiative. Drivers will be posted for the coastal police station boats that are now idling, he said. The government will also take steps to revive the Regional Forensic Science Lab in Kannur which had been defunct during the past five years, Chandy said.Additional Chief Secretary (Home) K Jayakumar, DGPJacob Punnoose and senior police officers attended the meeting.
