C-DOT to transfer GPON technology to telecom makers
GPON technology is the pivotal component required for broadband connectivity over optical fiber.

New Delhi: Indigenously developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology is now set to be transferred to the country's telecom manufacturers. "GPON technology is the pivotal component required for broadband connectivity over optical fiber. The GPON technology has been tested, validated, field evaluated and then became operational in the BSNL Network at Ajmer, Rajasthan and is being transferred to seven public and private manufacturers," an official statement said.

Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal would be present at the event to mark the transfer of technology to telecom manufacturers. The C-DOT GPON technology is targeted at fibre expansion to fulfill the requirements of major national programmes such as NOFN (National Optical Fiber Network),SWAN (State-Wide-Area Network) connectivity, Broadband connectivity in rural and remote areas.

The technology could be used to provide a future proof broadband solution to village panchayats and take the benefits of e-Education, e-Governance, e-Commerce and e-Medicine etc., it said. An autonomous R&D telecom technology centre, C-DOT was established in 1984.
