TIRUVANNAMALAI: A security guard was found dead outside a farmers’ co-operative loan society in Tiruvannamalai on Thursday, after burglars attempted to break into the building.Police have estimated that the bank had close to Rs 8 crore of jewellery and cash stored in lockers—belonging to farmers from eight villages. Operating from Periyakollapadi village on the Tiruvannamalai-Chengam highway, the bank was the only savings destination for farmers in the area.On Wednesday night, Elumalai (55), the security guard on duty heard a noise from the shutters. Police suspected that the guard had ventured there and stumbled upon the burglars. When police found him in the morning, he was hanging in a room behind the bank. The postmortem has indicated that his neck had been broken before hanging. Two smaller locks had been broken, but the main lock on the shutter remained firm.Deputy Superintendent of Police Ramesh inspected the scene and fingerprint experts and sniffer dogs were deployed. Police have launched an intensive hunt to track down the culprits. The same bank had been targeted earlier with two failed attempts in 1998 and 2008. Due to the security guard’s attempt, the fourth attempt was as unfruitful as the previous ones. The slain guard’s family staged a protest on the Chengam highway calling for the murderers’ arrest. They dispersed after the police assured them of action.
