New Delhi: Sampooran Singh Kalra aka Gulzar started as a lyricist before turning into one of India's most original storyteller. Though he started as a song writer with 'Swami Vivekananda' but is name came into limelight after 'Kabuliwala' (1957).
The strength of Gulzar lies in his depiction of reality which seems to be a cross between the harsh, naked truth and a hypothetical state. A career of 14 years as a lyricist prompted the man to go for direction in 1971. His first film 'Mere Apne' was just a break even venture, but the critical appreciation it received inspired producers to go for the simple and hard hitting style of Gulzar.
A string of critically and commercially acclaimed films followed after 'Mere Apne'. Some of them were 'Koshish', 'Parichay', 'Achanak', 'Mausam', 'Khusboo', 'Aandhi, and 'Lekin'.
After 1990, Gulzar directed only two films, 'Maachis' (1996) and 'Hu Tu Tu' (1999), but he kept writing songs.
His songs 'Kajrare' and 'Beedi jalai le' changed the way Bollywood looked at the item songs. His last film as lyricist was 'Chala Mussadi Office Office'.
Owner of one of the most vivid pens in the Hindi film industry, Gulzar was always an acclaimed poet even outside the industry. His books were as popular as his songs.
It's impossible for a music lover to forget songs such as 'Roz roz aankhon tale', 'Sili hawa chuu gayi' and 'Qatra qatra jeene do'.
