Natyarangam on Tuesday took up the stories of Indira Parthasarathy and Jayakanthan. The first one was performed by Navia Natarajan. Indira Parthasarathy’s story deals with an artist and a child, who has become close to the former. The motherless child asks the artist to draw a portrait of her mother by just imagining what her mother would be like. The artist makes an extra effort to draw the picture. On showing the portrait, the child becomes thrilled. The child asks the artist to keep the portrait till she returns from a trip with her family. Meanwhile, an art critic-buyer likes the portrait of the mother and says he will buy the artist’s entire collection for the sake of that one picture alone. However, artist  Sarangan says it is not possible and is even ready to forego a big sum of money just to satisfy the child. The child returns and tells him that she has got a new mother and that portrait was not required anymore. Navia, a seasoned dancer, tells the story through her abhinaya and also with occasional spoken words. A story such as this cannot be fully understood in miming alone.  More words were needed.  But Navia’s dance tells the story with maximum effect.  The concluding scene was really sharp, when the child announces the arrival of the new mother in her life.  The second story was by Jayakanthan POO Udhirum. This story is about a girl called Gowri who marries a soldier.  After marriage, the soldier leaves for the war assuring the girl that he would take her along when he comes home next. After a few months, Gowri receives the news of her husband’s demise. The incident shatters her completely. However,  she manages to console herself. She was made to understand that for the one flower that has fallen (her husband), another flower (child she is expecting) will be born. Navia gives plenty of narrations to help the audience understand and follow the story. Her portrayal of Gowri on hearing her husband’s death was  touching and this proved her evolved acting skills.
