Bay Of Bengal Shipwreck: Search For Barasat Crew Member Continues
Despite the grim situation, the family, friends, and neighbours hold on to the hope that Rahul will return home safely.

With only five months remaining until the wedding, tragedy struck, shattering all dreams. The Roy family from Hridaypur Shantinagar in Barasat is anxiously awaiting news.

A cargo ship en route from Kolkata’s Khidirpur Dock to Port Blair in the Andaman Sea overturned in the Bay of Bengal. Rahul Roy, a crew member, was on board. His father, Subodh Roy, received the devastating news at their Barasat home. Since then, there has been no trace of Rahul. Subodh Roy, a senior official at National Insurance Company, shared that although 11 crew members were rescued, three others, including Rahul and the ship’s captain, remain missing. The Coast Guard and Indian Air Force helicopters are continuing their search.

Rahul’s younger brother, Rohan Roy, an MBA student, rushed home to Hridaypur from Pune upon hearing the news of his brother’s disappearance. However, as days pass, hope is gradually fading. Subodh Roy expressed his concerns, urging the government and authorities to ensure that ships venturing into deep sea waters have valid fitness certificates. Without this, both the ship’s crew and the companies that rely on these vessels face significant risks.

The entire family has been in tears since the accident, which occurred 90 nautical miles from Kolkata. Neighbours are constantly checking for any updates on Rahul’s whereabouts. Rahul’s wedding was scheduled for February 13, but now the ceremony is uncertain. Despite the grim situation, the family, friends, and neighbours hold on to the hope that Rahul will return home safely. The Roy family waits, clinging to the hope that their missing son will be found.

A few months ago, a young Indian deck cadet, working with a Mumbai-based merchant shipping company, has been reported missing.

22-year-old Pranav Karad went missing when he was deployed on a tanker travelling between Singapore and Indonesia, according to The Indian Express. Pranav’s family, who are residents of Pune’s Warje area, are seeking help from the Indian government, the newspaper said.
