About 600 students from Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College lifted banners and placards in support of education in an awareness rally at the Marina Beach here on Friday. As part of a year -Long activity of the college’s Citizen Consumer Club, the rally was held to commemorate the World Literacy Day
Chief guest D Jayakumar, Speaker, Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly flagged off the rally and said that there are countless people illiterate in the world today. “The only way we can help them is to teach youngsters that their job does not end with learning alone. They should also teach others,” he said.
The rally was themed on the basis of ‘Each one teach one’. The students also planned to visit several orphanages and children’s homes to educate the children about morals and values necessary in today’s life. “The students have planned to visit two homes today, as part of an Citizen Consumer Club initiative. They will visit more in the near future,” said P Haridas, secretary of the college.
S Narasimhan, school principal, added that rallies like these will help create more awareness among the public. “Students should take up the initiative and spread the message,” he said.
The students’ representative Rahul P said that both members and non-members of the club had taken part in the rally.
