CBI takes over, registers cases against four civic authority officers.

New Delhi: In a major crackdown on corruption among Delhi civic officials, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday recovered assets worth several millions after its teams conducted searches at different places in the capital.

Four civic officials are under the CBI scanner for allegedly taking money from people to shield their illegal construction and commercial activities in Delhi residential areas.

A CBI statement said the accused officials also "resorted to bogus sealing to threaten and terrorise the owners of buildings and after negotiations collected huge amount as bribe, either directly or through middlemen".

The CBI registered cases against assistant engineer SK Lakra, and three junior engineers Jaibir Sehrawat, Umesh Prasar and TC Meena of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

The engineers are said to have extracted money from various building owners in Karol Bagh for token demolition of unauthorised constructions and allowing commercial activities in residential areas.

"Searches were conducted at 16 different places in and around New Delhi. A large number of incriminating documents showing nexus between the accused were recovered," the statement said.

"Besides documents showing huge investment in properties, both movable and immovable, (market value in crores of Rupees), large bank investments and insurance policies were recovered," the statement added.

Three lower level employees Vijender Pal, Vijender Singh and Ashok are also named in the graft case.
